Should I Install a Switch Panel or a Breaker Panel on My Boat?
John sent us a question due to a recent boat fire in his marina. He asked, "We've noticed some of the original DC breakers are broken on the back, and since two boats have caught fire and been destroyed in our marina, we are on pretty high alert now. We decided to build a new panel with new breakers. Will a switch panel be ok instead of a breaker panel for the DC house loads?"

I Have a 48V Electric Propulsion Battery Bank on My Boat, What Should I Use for My House Bank?
Thank you, Jeff. I appreciate your videos.
Hello Jeff, I am looking into a new Lithium house battery bank and would like to be able to charge from my existing equipment Solar, Alternator and battery charger. Would it be a good idea to run all the charging currents threw a single DC to DC converter like the Victron Orion TR 12/12-50 ? Kind regards, Carlos
Hi there, could you please let me know what size amp fuse I need for my 100w solar kit thats just been delivered? Its a free stranding type for it to stand next to my campervan (RV) next to the battery box/compartment. Noticed a guy on a camp site a few weeks ago that he had his fuse in his battery compartment/box. Not sure if he had a fuse in another place somewhere else near his controller though I didn't notice that as I just walked past and noticed his breaker/fuse was inside his battery compartment/box when his battery box door was open/down for some reason. (He might of swapped batteries I dont know) Thanks.
Thanks for video . I’m considering putting the combiner on my system . I have the 1 or 2 or Both battery switch . I guess I can look but wondering what size wires I’ll need ? I have a Cobalt with a 5.0 gxi Volvo penta
I was going to give this a pass but decided to give it a quick shot. It was time well spent for sure and I know a decent amount about electrical systems. One comment - fuses/breakers are always sized based on the wire because that is what they are supposed to protect. The wire is (should be) sized to the load. This is a niggly point but if the fuse is sized to the load but the wire is too small then you are going to have a problem that will only get worse as age takes its toll. If the wire is oversize then you can size the fuse to the load but this is typically not the case.
Confused now, I thought toroidal transformers were by nature isolating
How can I charge lithium batteries off of my mercury outboard? Lead starting battery, 2-12v lithium batteries for my 24v trolling motor. I installed a minnkota alternator 2 bank mk2dc to charge the old lead trolling motor batteries. Can I install 1 dc-dc unit after the alternator to chsrge 2 lithium?
Is it okay to have my start battery isolated from my electrical system except for my ACR? Currently, the start battery does not have a service disconnect switch installed on it.
Is it safe to mount the 12|12 30 victron dcdc charger in a gasoline engine room on a boat?

The type of generators / fuel on your boat ?
Sorry but radar is not no frills--on a sailboat you almost never use it--beats up the battery banks. Same with windspeed indicator, you can just look up on top of the mast for direction and with the windspeed, you can just feel and look at the sails and water speed to get that. AIS is also not no frills. After watching this video and taking his advice, you just wipped up a typical electrical package for a sailboat. No insights here.
Great question thanks for asking!!! : - ) : - )
Really?!
40 amp/ hr per day for keep cooled fridge
Given external regulators were common in older cars, 70s and prior, how are marine regulator units diffrent?
Three years ago, I went from a Tanzer 22 to a CS33. The learning curve on boat systems has been steep, the worst being about the electrical system, which I had sorted out by a marine electrician, based on the pre-purchase inspection. Everything was going reasonably fine until my Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger refused to power-up following the starting and house batteries discharge. This issue brought my attention back to my lack of knowledge about the electrical system. I am usually good at learning through reading technical books, but this topic is definitely my Achilles Tendon. A friend of mine sent me the link to your presentation on inverters and I can't thank him enough. I started going through your series of 30 instructional videos and my threshold knowledge has increased tenfold. So yes, I definitely relate to your introduction on this one and thank you for taking the time to make your videos available to the larger public.
I'm truly learning much here as it pertains to boats. While expirenced in auto and home circurts, marine as you point out is a diffrent ball game.
well i not have a boat or any thing like that i just want to know how i can connect a 8 Gage wire on to a 16 Gage because i need to connect a Female Power Jack Connector it will only fite 12 or 16 Gage but not a 8 Gage so i have to add a short 16 Gage maybe only a inch long or shorter to add the Female Power Jack Connector at the other and i need to ass 16 Gage to 8 Gage from the produt to the 8 Gage wire
I really need help my boat when we click a button or are driving the boat if we hit a bump or wave the power would sorta cut out and it would make our speed domitors would cut out and make the boat go crazy with lights flashing and things not working how do I solve that
I bought this battery monitor in 2015, but after a few years the display lighting is very weak and almost impossible to read in the dark. I am looking for a way to disassemble the battery monitor and replace the LEDs.
Hi, my MPPT Charge controller 100/50 is showing - State is off - why is the charger off too?..
COI, DDS, Control 1, Control X, Control X Plus, Contact 6, Contact 6plus, soooooo many modules its very confusing
a FET or MOSFET is a transistor. A transistor is a controlled diode with a gate. In my book it will loose equivalent to a diode based (maybe slightly less). Why does the heatsink a similar size then ????. Forget Isolator, in 2024 go with DC-DC converters with a diigital charging profile like the Victron DC-DC. You batteries will say thank you...
We have a Victron Energy, Argofet Battery Isolator on our Formula BR 310 dual engine boat and we are having a charging problem from the engine to which the isolator is connected. The boat was purchased used. From the manufacturer's literature , it shows two small wires (I will call them signal wires) that are connected to the isolator that are in addition to the connected power cables. The two wires are connected to a terminal marked "Ground" and a terminal marked "Energize". The Energize connection is shown to be connected to the run/stop switch on the boat and of course Ground to battery negative. On our boat the terminal marked "Energize" has no connection to it and the terminal marked "Ground" has a fused (0.5 amp) wire connected to it that is coming from the positive terminal of the cranking battery. In checking with the boat's manual I found that the boat is wired according to the manual. Can you tell me if the isolator wiring on the boat, which is in agreement with Formual's manual, is alternate way to hook up the isolator. BTW when checking the fuse, it was found to be blown.
Help? I have a 99 seadoo jet boat. 2 batteries. A Perko switch with Batt 1, Batt2, Both, Off and an arc battery isolator. I believe i have it all wired correctly. If I need to charge both batteries, do I just connect the charger up to the Batt1 posts to charge both batteries? I assume the isolator will kick in and switch to Batt2 when it determines Batt1 is full or does an isolator not do that? Does the Perko switch need to be set to Both in order for both batteries to get charged off of the charger connected to Batt1 or should it be set to off? Or should I just disconnect both batteries and just charge them separately? I was hoping to just put the charger on one battery (Batt1) and have it charge both. I assume it should charge both batteries since they are connected to each other by the isolator. AND they are technically connected together at the Perko switch if it is set to both. This leads me to my last question, if have boat ignition and stereo on Perko Batt switch 1 and the stereo amplifier on Batt switch 2, is it OK to drive with the Perko Switch set to Both? I keep hearing conflicting answers. I don't park and listen to the stereo so that's not a worrie for me. I just don't want to mess up the batteries or system if Im driving in the Both settings. Any help is greatly appreciated. And sorry if this is sloppy
JEFF!! This one has been driving me crazy for a year. Why did my tach stop working? - because - by the way - when the tach stops the engine hours stop ticking off as well. Great info - thanks. I gotta try this out now. Load up when the tach goes off.
Jeff, excellent content and a real help. I got a question for you. I'm surprised I can't solve this on my own. I want to mount a thru Deck multi pin plug next to my mast step, so when I put up or take down the deck stepped mast all I have to do is plug it in. Do you know a specific plug to use? My wires are 14 Guage I believe. Thank you
It's an 8 minute video. Why would you need to drink coffee half way through?
Forgot LiFePO4 can't be charged below freezing, or you'll destroy the expensive batteries.
I have an AGM battery in my brand new Honda Odyssey and it is at 14.1V when the vehicle is on. Immediately after shutting off it goes to 12.3V and my radio lasts 10 to 15 minutes. Honda stealership says that's normal sir. I call @*#*(@*@*it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Will this isolator work with a stator?
This is what I was looking for. Not as fun as watching people sail about, but essential information to understand.
Jeff would it be acceptable on a boat to have a relay to open and close the circuit in this type of installation?
Will the Victron Isolation Transformer - 7000W - 230V - 50-60 Hz accept 240vac split phase input/output?
Great info on stainless washers.
A schematic is king, it is needed to understand the setup and to avoid any kind of confusion or misunderstanding.
Will these high output alternators make solar obsolete? 8kw!
It says on the label ACR - Automatic Charging Replay , not automatic combining relay.
Wow. That’s super interesting.
Does this apply to the negative going to an inverter, or do we go directly from the terminal? Thanks
Quick question is 16 volts ok for my batteries? Seems that is the default setting before the 30a Renogy wanderer controller shuts off power to the flooded batteries. This is on my boat 2 house and 2 start batteries. Only load on the house batteries is a 110v fridge from inverter and stereo with an amp. What is weird is my voltage gauge on my panel show 13.4 v when I test with a meter to the house bank it is 16v. Thanks

Thank you; I am constantly having issues with the Bluetooth on my Victron Smart 100/30 controller. I do run two systems off of my solar panels. One for lead acid and one for Lithium. I use a Perko switch to achieve this. For the lead acid batteries I am using a Bouge RV controller and have no issues with its Bluetooth function. The Victron has problems. Now I know how to reset it. I do have a breaker between the lithium batteries and the Victron controller. Now I know in what order to perform the reset task.
You look greek and you have a greek name are you?
A question. I have a 96v, 10amp solar panel system charging a 48v lithium ion battery bank via a charge controller that takes in only 66 volt from the panel system. Is it technically possible to charge a 12v house battery bank with the same panel system by adding a 12v charge controller?
I’d add to your list of spare parts - heat shrink, butane torch to solder/heat shrink/butt connector heat shrink. A brass brush and contact cleaner. Roll of solder. A crimp/wire strip/cutter tool. A very good light source that is bright and compact so you can see in dark places to diagnose and make repairs. And lastly, bring any electrical manuals/wire diagrams for your boat/ and a spiral notebook for making notes/lists/and jotting down things you need so that you don’t forget things.
Is there any issue with heat generated on the canvas or hardtop?
Link to the 2-hour ground video you mentioned?
Do y’all have a comprehensive course to train marine mechanics in the field? I’d be super interested in a diagnosis master class.
