Should I Install a Switch Panel or a Breaker Panel on My Boat?
John sent us a question due to a recent boat fire in his marina. He asked, "We've noticed some of the original DC breakers are broken on the back, and since two boats have caught fire and been destroyed in our marina, we are on pretty high alert now. We decided to build a new panel with new breakers. Will a switch panel be ok instead of a breaker panel for the DC house loads?"

Hi there, could you please let me know what size amp fuse I need for my 100w solar kit thats just been delivered? Its a free stranding type for it to stand next to my campervan (RV) next to the battery box/compartment. Noticed a guy on a camp site a few weeks ago that he had his fuse in his battery compartment/box. Not sure if he had a fuse in another place somewhere else near his controller though I didn't notice that as I just walked past and noticed his breaker/fuse was inside his battery compartment/box when his battery box door was open/down for some reason. (He might of swapped batteries I dont know) Thanks.

I was going to give this a pass but decided to give it a quick shot. It was time well spent for sure and I know a decent amount about electrical systems. One comment - fuses/breakers are always sized based on the wire because that is what they are supposed to protect. The wire is (should be) sized to the load. This is a niggly point but if the fuse is sized to the load but the wire is too small then you are going to have a problem that will only get worse as age takes its toll. If the wire is oversize then you can size the fuse to the load but this is typically not the case.

Sorry but radar is not no frills--on a sailboat you almost never use it--beats up the battery banks. Same with windspeed indicator, you can just look up on top of the mast for direction and with the windspeed, you can just feel and look at the sails and water speed to get that. AIS is also not no frills. After watching this video and taking his advice, you just wipped up a typical electrical package for a sailboat. No insights here.

Three years ago, I went from a Tanzer 22 to a CS33. The learning curve on boat systems has been steep, the worst being about the electrical system, which I had sorted out by a marine electrician, based on the pre-purchase inspection. Everything was going reasonably fine until my Victron Multiplus Inverter/Charger refused to power-up following the starting and house batteries discharge. This issue brought my attention back to my lack of knowledge about the electrical system. I am usually good at learning through reading technical books, but this topic is definitely my Achilles Tendon. A friend of mine sent me the link to your presentation on inverters and I can't thank him enough. I started going through your series of 30 instructional videos and my threshold knowledge has increased tenfold. So yes, I definitely relate to your introduction on this one and thank you for taking the time to make your videos available to the larger public.

a FET or MOSFET is a transistor. A transistor is a controlled diode with a gate. In my book it will loose equivalent to a diode based (maybe slightly less). Why does the heatsink a similar size then ????. Forget Isolator, in 2024 go with DC-DC converters with a diigital charging profile like the Victron DC-DC. You batteries will say thank you...

We have a Victron Energy, Argofet Battery Isolator on our Formula BR 310 dual engine boat and we are having a charging problem from the engine to which the isolator is connected. The boat was purchased used. From the manufacturer's literature , it shows two small wires (I will call them signal wires) that are connected to the isolator that are in addition to the connected power cables. The two wires are connected to a terminal marked "Ground" and a terminal marked "Energize". The Energize connection is shown to be connected to the run/stop switch on the boat and of course Ground to battery negative. On our boat the terminal marked "Energize" has no connection to it and the terminal marked "Ground" has a fused (0.5 amp) wire connected to it that is coming from the positive terminal of the cranking battery. In checking with the boat's manual I found that the boat is wired according to the manual. Can you tell me if the isolator wiring on the boat, which is in agreement with Formual's manual, is alternate way to hook up the isolator. BTW when checking the fuse, it was found to be blown.

Help? I have a 99 seadoo jet boat. 2 batteries. A Perko switch with Batt 1, Batt2, Both, Off and an arc battery isolator. I believe i have it all wired correctly. If I need to charge both batteries, do I just connect the charger up to the Batt1 posts to charge both batteries? I assume the isolator will kick in and switch to Batt2 when it determines Batt1 is full or does an isolator not do that? Does the Perko switch need to be set to Both in order for both batteries to get charged off of the charger connected to Batt1 or should it be set to off? Or should I just disconnect both batteries and just charge them separately? I was hoping to just put the charger on one battery (Batt1) and have it charge both. I assume it should charge both batteries since they are connected to each other by the isolator. AND they are technically connected together at the Perko switch if it is set to both. This leads me to my last question, if have boat ignition and stereo on Perko Batt switch 1 and the stereo amplifier on Batt switch 2, is it OK to drive with the Perko Switch set to Both? I keep hearing conflicting answers. I don't park and listen to the stereo so that's not a worrie for me. I just don't want to mess up the batteries or system if Im driving in the Both settings. Any help is greatly appreciated. And sorry if this is sloppy

A crimp/wire strip/cutter tool. A very good light source that is bright and compact so you can see in dark places to diagnose and make repairs. And lastly, bring any electrical manuals/wire diagrams for your boat/ and a spiral notebook for making notes/lists/and jotting down things you need so that you don’t forget things.
